Layton, Utah – Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Chief Master Sergeant Walter Frank Leonard, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), age 80, died October 22, 2009 at the Ogden Regional Medical Center.
He was born September 13, 1929 in Salem, New Jersey and raised by Robert Taylor and Anastasia Leonard. He married Elizabeth Ruth Cuff on New Year’s Eve, 1954 in Beeville, Texas.
Walter joined the U.S. Navy in January 1948 at Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago. He proudly served at Navy bases in Norfolk, VA, Atlantic City, N.J. and Beeville, TX where he served as a crewmember and electrician on PBM Mariner patrol seaplanes, on AD-4N Skyraider night attack bombers and F9F Panther fighters. He also served on two cruises with CV-40 USS Tarawa and one around the world cruise with CV-18 USS Wasp. In January 1957, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed with various Strategic Air Command squadrons in Texas, Bermuda, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Guam. He worked as an electrician on KC-97 and KC-135 tankers and B-52 bombers. He retired in September 1975 from the Air Force Logistics Command at Hill Air Force Base. He then began a second career at HAFB in logistics and worked on the Peacekeeper ICBM program.
Walter learned to fish from an early age on the Delaware River and enjoyed the hobby for much of his life no matter where he was stationed. Along with his wife Ruth, they were avid bowlers.
His beloved wife died of cancer in September 1997. Ruth always made a warm home for the family no matter where the Navy or Air Force stationed them. In the years since her passing, he missed her greatly, but now will miss her no more.
Two children survive Walter: Phyllis A. (Tim) Rotert and Robert V. (Dianne) Leonard. He also had six grandsons: Kenneth Rotert, Benjamin Rotert, T. Mark Rotert, Robert V. (Jamie) Leonard, Jr., Sean C. Leonard and Geoffrey T. Leonard. His two great-grandchildren are Chloe M. Leonard and Nolan R. Leonard.
Friends may attend a viewing Tuesday, October 27, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 250 N. Fairfield Road, Layton.
